TEEN NAMED SPOKESPERSON FOR MILITARY APPRECIATION MONTH

Washington, DC A high school Sophomore, who last year began national letter drive to collect and distribute one million thank you letters and emails to U.S. military troops, was named spokesperson for the upcoming National Military Appreciation Month.

Alice Wax, founder of National Military Appreciation Month (NMAM), named Shauna Fleming, 15, of Orange, California the spokesperson for NMAM 2005 which runs the month of May.

“Shauna has done amazing work this past year in collecting and distributing over 1.2 million thank you messages to our troops. She epitomizes what NMAM is all about,” said Wax. “Not only has she organized the letter campaign, she is helping the Department of Defense promote their America Supports You campaign (www.AmericaSupportsYou.mil), she has her own talk show on wsRadio.com, and she recently completed a book about supporting our military. Quite incredible,” Wax added.

Fleming has received much support with her campaign, which is almost a year old. Country singer, John Michael Montgomery lent his hit song, “Letters From Home” to Fleming to use as her theme. NASCAR also got involved allowing her to collect letters and promote her organization at several race events.

“Many teams, including Roush Racing, their sponsors, and NASCAR.com, have been especially supportive of A Million Thanks. Drivers like Matt Kenseth, Greg Biffle and team owner Jack Roush have been really great to me, which in turn has generated more letters for our troops. I was at California Speedway last weekend and I will be part of the Talladega Motorspeedway, NMAM kickoff on May 1st, said Fleming.

National Military Appreciation Month was made official last year when Congress passed Concurrent Resolution 328. The resolution calls on Americans to honor our military "with appropriate ceremonies and activities”. Finally, the resolution urges the White House Commission on Remembrance to "work to support the goals and objectives" of the month.

Fleming has already begun her spokesperson duties including creating her own Top Ten list of things people can do to show their appreciation to our military. The list is available at www.NMAM.org.

“This year, with all that has happened in Iraq, it is especially important for all Americans to participate in NMAM even if it is just putting a flag up on your house, car or business. Since the 1700’s, our military men and women sacrificed a lot so that we can have the wonderful country we enjoy today. I hope all Americans will do something to honor our Armed Forces during May,” Fleming concluded.
